Uptown Magazine SuperHeavy Review

You might wish for a little more irony in the name for this “super group” assemblage of star power than is evident in the marketing but that doesn’t prevent the music here from being a surprisingly good amalgam of roots reggae, R&B and Eastern-infused pop/rock. Mick Jagger is never far from being front and centre doing the Jagger shuffle, but it’s the supporting cast that shines brightest. Damian Marley’s joyful old-school reggae and over-the-top toasting steals the show; Dave Stewart’s production and guitar work supplies much needed glue; Joss Stone’s soul belting provides Jagger with the best foil since Merry Clayton’s star turn on Gimme Shelter; and A.R Rhaman (Slumdog Millionaire) brings world beat pop exoticism to this musical potluck. Once you get over your cynicism, play Marley’s SuperHeavy, Joss Stone’s Miracle Worker or Mick’s ballad Never Gonna Change real loud and have some fun.
