SuperHeavy collaborators play new songs and old favorites

Joss Stone and Dave Stewart are having a moment. Last year the English soul singer hired the former Eurythmics member to produce her latest solo disc, LP1. Then Stewart drafted Stone into SuperHeavy, the globe-tripping all-star outfit that also includes Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones, reggae scion Damian Marley and Bollywood film-music giant A.R. Rahman. And last night at the Troubadour in Los Angeles the pair unveiled yet another project, the More Love tour. “We wrote a film, and we wrote a soundtrack,” Stone told the capacity crowd by way of explanation. “But we never made the film.”

The duo’s new show – which hits California’s Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on Saturday before a Valentine’s Day appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson – does indeed contain some fresh material: bluesy acoustic tunes like “What Are We Fighting For,” “Who Are We” and “Nowhere But Your Arms,” more than one of which seemed to make a rhyme last night of “together” and “forever.” (These two are serious about increasing the peace.) But More Love also draws from both artists’ back catalogs, including Stone’s 2004 hit “You Had Me,” stuff from LP1 and – perhaps most excitingly – a handful of Eurythmics’ ’80s-pop classics.

Like all singers not named Annie Lennox, Stone didn’t quite conjure the deep mystery of Stewart’s former partner, even as she nailed the yodel-y bit in “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).” But the young singer did tap a convincing melancholy for “Here Comes the Rain Again” and sounded great in an appealingly stripped-down version of “Who’s That Girl?” At the end of the 70-minute gig Stewart revved up the unmistakable punk-gospel guitar riff of “Missionary Man,” for which they were joined by Michael Jackson’s former guitarist Orianthi. (Hey, it’s Grammy Week in L.A.– what do you expect?)

Stone cut loose during the closer, working her melisma and flailing her long blonde hair like some kind of post-hippie love child. Behind his signature sunglasses-at-night, Stewart looked pleased as punch.

When were you first aware music was in your blood?

When I heard a record player for the first time, it was a euphoric experience.

Tell me about the very first song you ever wrote.

It was called “Deep December” and I wrote it with a hyper realist painter (artist).

Are you the kind of rockstar you always pictured yourself being when you first set out to make music or has your vision of yourself as a musician changed?

I’m pretty much the rockstar I imagined except I always thought I would get more sleep.

What has being a musician taught you about yourself or about life?

Not to take things too seriously, I know that on my death bed I won’t be thinking “Oh that was a great business deal I did” or whatever; I’ll be hearing music in my head and seeing the faces of the people I have loved pass in front of me.

What makes a collaboration good, in your opinion?

When each person has a unique talent to bring to the table and the people involved enjoy the creative process.

Give me some insight into your music and songwriting process.

I just make things up off the top of my head or things just pop in my head, melodies or lyrics. I usually try and write them down so I won’t forget, then when I pull them out I finesse the concept.

What is the strangest thing that’s ever inspired a song?

Joss Stone and I nearly drowning inspired us to write “Beautiful People” for Superheavy.

Which song off your last album, ‘The Blackbird Diaries,” is most significant to you right now?

Magic In The Blues

What excites you about making music?

The infinite possibilities and the fact that once there was nothing and then something unique appears!

Are there any covers of your songs that you love?

Marilyn Manson’s Sweet Dreams.

Which songs from your entire catalog are your favorite to perform today?

Here Comes The Rain Again.

ABC ordered a pair of comedy pilots Wednesday including one starring Reba McEntire.
The actress/singer will reunite with Kevin Abbott, executive producer of the CW sitcom “Reba,” for “Malibu Country,” from ABC Studios.

The multi-camera half-hour follows a fictionalized version of McEntire who divorces her rock-star husband and moves her three kids and mom from Nashville to Malibu, where she tries to reignite her singing career and protect the family’s values.

Mindy Schultheis, Michael Hanel, Pam Williams, Dave Stewart and Narvel Blackstock are also attached as executive producers.

Meeting with Dave Stewart at his Hollywood dream factor is a dizzying experience, not unlike what one imagines visiting Warhol’s factory was like in the day, minus the zombies and cocaine. There’s a whole lot of people in a unified space doing a whole lot of art all the time. To Dave, it’s more Wonka than Warhol, “except instead of candy we make ideas.”

A lot of ideas. The Dave engine, which sprawls over two stories above Hollywood & Vine, goes 24-7, sparking always in many directions at once: besides his myriad musical projects as artist, songwriter and/or producer (including his glorious recent solo album The Blackbird Diaries and his most recent supergroup Superheavy, which includes bandmates Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, A.R. Rahman and Damian Marley), there’s films (he films everything always), books, TV shows, photographs and always more. Dave’s staff is forever editing and mixing and working away to his instructions, though remarkably agile when it comes to showing a visitor a film of Dave and Shakira dancing in a barn, or soloing Stevie Wonder’s miraculous harmonica solo on The Eurythmics’ “Here Comes The Rain Again.”

He’s the great collaborator. Most famous of course for the Eurythmics, his collaboration with Annie Lennox, his genius is for humbly standing behind the singer – whether it’s Annie or Mick or Tom Petty (they concocted “Don’t Come Around Here No More”) or any of the other stars with whom he’s written songs (such as Bono, Dylan, Bryan Ferry, Stevie Nicks and Sinead O’Connor), and making them shine. “There’s only two kinds of people,” his mother told him. “There are drains and radiators. People who drag you down and people who spark you up.” Without a doubt, Dave Stewart is a radiator. He brings out what is essential and best about an artist, whether it’s Dylan, Petty or Jagger.
